Deutsche Telekom and O2 Telefónica intensify cooperation

Deutsche Telekom and O2 Telefónica will work even more closely together in the field of fiber optics in the future. Both companies have signed a contract for a new purchasing model for the marketing of fiber-optic connections in Deutsche Telekom's network. This purchasing model offers O2 Telefónica the opportunity to map Telekom's new fiber-optic portfolio for its own customer contact. The two companies had already agreed in 2020 to extend their cooperation in the fixed network at the time.

7.4 million households marketable

Currently, O2 Telefónica can market fiber-optic tariffs to 7.4 million households through its cooperation with Deutsche Telekom, with around 2 million households to be added annually.

Where Deutsche Telekom has expanded or will continue to expand its FTTH network, Telefónica can market the connection and use of fiber optics on the basis of the contract under the same starting conditions as Deutsche Telekom.

This means, among other things, that O2 customers will be connected just as quickly as Deutsche Telekom's customers and will receive the same services for operating and troubleshooting the fiber-optic connection.

Both companies can offer their tariffs simultaneously during the entire pre-marketing and expansion phase. This gives customers a greater choice, as they can choose between the different tariffs of O2 Telefónica and Deutsche Telekom.

Many people and companies benefit from collaboration

"Many people and companies in Germany benefit from this cooperation. Deutsche Telekom stands for the principle of open networks, open access, and cooperation. We provide every third connection through cooperations and joint ventures. With this contract, we also want to further increase the utilization of our broadband network. We invest the financial resources we receive in the expansion of our high-speed networks and in the best customer experience," says Dr. Kerstin Baumgart, Managing Director Wholesale at Telekom Deutschland.

"With the new contract, our O2 customers will have even more attractive access to Germany's largest fiber-optic network. We offer them high-speed access at a very attractive price-performance ratio. Because they receive our fiber-optic tariffs at the same price as for DSL or cable. This means that O2 customers can switch to fiber optics at no additional cost as soon as it is available to them," says Andreas Laukenmann, Member of the Board of Management for Private Customers at O2 Telefónica.

Telekom: 8.8 million households can book fiber-optic tariff

The federal government's gigabit strategy envisages that all households in Germany will be able to use fiber optics by 2030. The nationwide supply of fiber optics is crucial for the digitization of the state. Data consumption is growing exponentially and will continue to increase due to new digital applications such as telemedicine or SmartHome.

Currently, 8.8 million households in Deutsche Telekom's network can book a fiber-optic tariff with up to 1 gigabit per second. 36 million households can book at least one tariff with up to 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) or more in the Telekom network. Of these, over 30 million households can even receive a tariff with up to 250 Mbit/s or more.

Deutsche Telekom operates a fiber-optic network in Germany that is over 770,000 kilometers long. The company is expanding fiber optics throughout Germany and plans to provide fiber optics to 2.5 million more households this year. By 2030, Deutsche Telekom wants to provide at least 25 million households with a fiber-optic connection. By the end of 2024, there should be ten million connections.
